Post-round Hangout
Caddy Shack offers golfers a place to unwind after 18 holes, and fun for other sports fans, too
TJay Johnson likes golf, so it makes sense that the bar he owns is named Caddy Shack.
It also helps that Johnson’s a big-time fan of the 1980 golf comedy Caddyshack. In fact, he said it’s one of his favorite movies.
Johnson has owned Caddy Shack for the last five years. His golf-themed sports bar shows all the PGA Tour events, in addition to a whole host of other sporting events, including a professional baseball package and Nebraska football pay-per-view games on eight flat-screens in his northwest Omaha sports bar.
During the latter half of weekend nights, the crowd gets younger and the sports bar theme melds a little bit with that of a nightclub.
Specials include an anytime deal of $14 for a bucket of domestic beer and a 35-cent wings deal on Monday nights.
Johnson said he thinks Caddy Shack’s main selling point is its bar food, which he credits to a great kitchen staff.
“We got great cooks,” he said. “It’s a straight up bar food menu but I think it’s a step above.”
Hand-pattied burgers and piled-high nachos are at the top of the list of things to get, Johnson said, as is the house specialty, the Shack Melt. It’s a hoagie with turkey, bacon, cheese and a spicy mayo concoction called the Shack Sauce on top.
“It’s the Shack Sauce that makes it great,” he said.
Many of Johnson’s employees have been with him a long time, some as far back as when he took over the space. He said that makes it so even semi-regular customers will see familiar faces behind the bar.
He attributed the employee longevity to one of two things, perhaps both. Either Caddy Shack’s a good, fun place to be, “or I’m just one hell of a boss, I guess,” Johnson joked.
He said the Caddy Shack also has a good connection with its neighbor, Miracle Hill Golf Course. He said he regularly plays the course and some of the course pros even come down to the bar, he said.
“We work well together,” he said.
Johnson said he thinks his bar should appeal to golfers hitting the Miracle Hill links.
“It’s a good place to come after a round,” he said.
So those looking to unwind after playing 18 holes have a place to stop, Johnson said. Personally, he likes to cap off a round with a shot of Jagermeister.
